Chance

For this assignment we were given a piece of sketch paper, 2 glue sticks, and a bunch of ripped up colored paper. The task was to drop the ripped up pieces onto the sketch paper in a creative way so it was all up to chance. My group decided that the way we wanted to do this was to take a piece of paper and spin around 3 times before placing the piece on the sketch paper. All of this is done while your eyes are closed, and another group member spins the sketch paper. This maximizes the amount of chance for where the piece will land, and sometimes the piece landed on the table or even each other's hand.

This assignment calls back to the Dadaist movement where everything was left up to chance. The artists in this movement didn't strategically plan out their pieces and just let everything fall into place. This challenged the movements that came before it where artistry was planned and meticulous. Dadaism is nonsense and questions society, which is what this task also employs. Our life is structured and planned down to the minute, but this assignment makes you let go of control and just let things be as they are.

I really enjoyed this assignment as my group made it fun. It was odd at first and we were questioning its method, but once we got into it we embraced it. We had some funny moments with some pieces of paper landing on the table or on someone's hand, which made it more enjoyable. We all fully embraced the process by the end of the exercise and our final product is shown above.
