Discussion:
In class this week we discussed the invention and evolution of the printing press. The discussion question we were given was to talk about what would’ve happened if the printing press was never invented, and my group realized a lot would never be the same. The printing press was the foundation for everything that has to do with news and information being spread to the public. As a result, without it, we wouldn’t have any books, newspapers, magazines, news channels, posters, search engines, etc. Anything that has to do with the spread of information would’ve been halted and probably never invented. The need for something digital came in the late 80s when computer use was on the rise and without the first initial invention, there wouldn’t have been a need for it. I also feel that social media would be drastically different as a result of the printing press never being invented. Social media originated with the idea of sharing one’s life quickly and efficiently to a large number of people. This idea wouldn’t have been possible because the printing press had the same goal, just in a different medium. Human thinking was always trying to find a way to make the spread of information faster and more accessible, so without the printing press, we would be back where we were in the early 1800s.
